Finding Ways to Earn Money
As a coach, I’m often asked about how to make a living doing what I love. My coaching business didn’t take off right away, and I had to do a lot to make ends meet in the meantime. In this post, I want to share my story and be really open about the different income sources I explored along the way.
Coaching Business
When I fully launched my coaching business in April 2020, I started making around one to $2,000 every month pretty consistently. Although I could technically live off of that in Vietnam or Latin America, I was also investing back into the business. I was learning all about online business and marketing, getting my coaching certification, and starting to have some business expenses too.
Upwork
To make ends meet, I started exploring other income sources. I ventured into the world of Upwork, a freelance exchange platform where you can build up a business doing different projects. I did personal statement writing or editing, medical writing, and helped build a personal brand for a CEO in Canada. I also taught AP biology to Chinese students online. Upwork allowed me to use skills that I already had, market myself around them, and expand my network.
Using Your Network
Networking is essential when looking for different income sources. I started building up a solid network of people who were earning income online and figuring out how they did it. I asked a bunch of questions, and this led to me getting a job at a boutique company in China, prepping high-achieving Chinese students for boarding schools in England or Singapore. I started teaching AP biology and other subjects, personal statement writing, and English.
Permission to Make Ends Meet
It’s okay to shift your financial goals for a temporary period of time. You can decide that you’re not going to be contributing to your 401k, or you’re not going to be saving this amount of money, and your goals are going to be different for now. There are so many ways to make ends meet while you figure out your goals and purpose or start pursuing them. It’s all part of the journey, and it’s okay if it’s messy.
Conclusion
There is no shortage of ways to make money. There’s no shortage of ways to put value into the world and receive money in exchange for that, even if it’s temporary. It’s all okay and part of the journey. I hope my story inspires you to explore different income sources, tap into income sources, and not feel trapped because of money. Remember to use your network, be creative, and give yourself permission to make ends meet.
It’s okay to just get a job to make ends meet while you’re figuring out your next thing.
