How to Find Fulfillment in Your Career

Are you feeling unfulfilled in your career? Do you feel like you’re stuck in a box, constrained by limiting beliefs and societal obligations? According to Dr. Sherita Gaskins Tillet, the key to finding fulfillment is to honor your feelings, be curious, and explore your options. In this episode of the lifeaftermedicine podcast, we’ll explore the wisdom of Dr. Sherita Gaskins Tillet, a physician and founder of Level Up Lady Docs, as she shares her insights on finding your purpose and living authentically.

The Importance of Community

One of the most important aspects of finding fulfillment in your career is to find a community of people who think like you. Sherita stresses the importance of finding other dreamers and crazy people who live outside the box. These are the people who will encourage you to keep going when you feel like giving up, and who will push you to be your best self. Dr. Sherita has created a Facebook group called Level Up Lady Docs, where women physicians can connect with each other and share their stories. She also hosts a live show called Level Up Live, where she interviews women physicians who are doing extraordinary things both inside and outside of the exam room.

The Power of Self-Discovery

Dr. Sherita also emphasizes the importance of self-discovery. She encourages people to check in with themselves and explore what they’re feeling. “Be curious,” she says. “Take some time to explore what it is that you’re feeling.” For Dr. Sherita, this process of self-discovery led her to realize that she wanted something more out of her career. She was feeling surface discomfort, but it wasn’t until she started to delve deeper that she uncovered some of the things that she wanted. She also stresses the importance of giving yourself permission to explore and to want something else.

The Still Small Voice

Another key aspect of finding fulfillment in your career is to listen to the still small voice inside of you. Dr. Sherita believes that this voice, which she considers to be the Holy Spirit, guides us and tells us where to go. “It knows what it wants. It knows what it needs,” she says. She encourages people to honor this voice and to not discount it, even if it means taking a detour or doing something weird. “If you want something different, you have to do something different,” she says.

The Importance of Authenticity

Living authentically is another key aspect of finding fulfillment in your career, according to Dr. Sherita. She believes that we’re living authentically when our inside matches our outside. It’s important to listen to the still small voice inside of us and to honor what we’re feeling. “You just wanna be who you are. That’s the easiest thing,” she says. She also stresses the importance of not putting ourselves in a box and of finding a community of people who think like us.

Embracing Growth Mindset

Finally, Dr. Sherita emphasizes the importance of embracing a growth mindset. This is something that she sees being taught in schools today, and she wishes that she had learned it when she was younger. “Nobody taught us about a growth mindset like they just told us. This is what you do. This is how you do it. Nobody said, this is how you think. This is what you can imagine. This is what you can do,” she says. A growth mindset allows us to keep growing and to not be afraid of failure. It encourages us to keep trying, even when things don’t work out the way we want them to.

In conclusion, finding fulfillment in your career is about honoring your feelings, being curious, exploring your options, finding a community of people who think like you, listening to the still small voice inside of you, living authentically, and embracing a growth mindset. It’s about realizing that you’re not alone and that there are people out there who can support you and help you achieve your dreams.

“You have to listen to that still small voice inside of you. Because it knows what it wants. It knows what it needs.”
