What are values?
Values are what is most important to you in life. They represent where you want to spend your time, energy, and money. Identifying your values can help you make decisions that align with what’s important to you, giving you a sense of fulfillment.
Values Misalignment in your Career
Values misalignment can happen in a few different ways. First, your career could be directly violating your values. For example, if you value connection and your job requires you to rush through patient visits in 15 minutes, you may feel a sense of violation. Additionally, your career could be taking up so much of your time and energy that you don’t have the ability to live out your values outside of work. Finally, your values may have shifted or changed, and your external life hasn’t caught up to that.
Struggling to Identify your Values
Identifying your values can be challenging, and there are a few common struggles people encounter. First, we often have “should-based” values that are based on what society expects of us, rather than what we truly value. Second, we may identify superficial values without understanding what they truly mean to us. Third, we may not understand what living out our values would look like in day-to-day life. Finally, we may not be honest with ourselves about what our values truly are.
Why Identifying Values is Important to Find Fulfillment
Identifying your values is important because it helps you make decisions that align with what’s most important to you. Living out your values can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose to your life, and can help you feel more connected to yourself and others. Additionally, identifying values can help you understand why you may be feeling unfulfilled or dissatisfied in your career.
If you’re feeling unfulfilled in your career, identifying your values can be a helpful first step in finding clarity and understanding what’s missing. By understanding your values, you can make decisions that align with what’s most important to you, giving you a sense of fulfillment in your career and in life.
